Anti-Virus Software

After the setup of any computer the most important step is to install anti-virus software. It is a cost effective method of protecting data and it reduces repair cost. Remember anti-virus software only helps to prevent virus infection. Some viruses are written to specifically attack the anti-virus programs.

Backups

It is your responsibility to back up your data and in the event of hard drive failure you’re protected. If you get a virus it can result in the need of formatting and reloading your computer. We do not back up data before formatting and reloading your computer. If you have a CD-R/W drive use it to back up your data monthly, if you don’t have a CD-R/W drive you need some type of backup system. If your system is a Server it needs a tape backup drive so that system files as well as data can be backed up daily.

Surge Suppressors

Connect any power, phone and modem cables into a surge suppressor.
This includes broadband i.e., Road Runner and DSL modems as well as all dial-up modems. 85% of all power damage to computer components comes from a phone-line power source. Surge suppressors need to be replaced every two years at a minimum.

Software & System Information

Keep your system information and software in a safe place. By law, no one can install a Microsoft operating system on your computer without your valid product key. In the event of a repair, costs to you will be reduced, if you supply us with your system drivers, if we have to download drivers the current costs is $35.00 per device. If you supply us with your system drivers, repairs to your computer can be completed in an expeditious manner.

Maintenance

Run scandisk every week, it helps to keep a healthy file structure. Run disk cleanup once a week. Run disk defragmenter once a week, it puts files in contiguous format and reduces degradation in performance.

Personal Firewall

For security reasons install personal firewall software. It helps keep hackers out of your computer/network. It protects your personal data from being sent out on the internet by Trojan horse viruses. Alerts are given by the software to identify suspicious activity.

Third Party Software

All cleanup and file removal tools that are needed come with Windows. Do not install any third party software for this purpose. Technically they produce virus like activity.

Removing Programs

The correct method is to go to the control panel then to add/remove programs icon and uninstall from there. Do not use “Delete” to remove a program, missing links/shortcuts will occur as well as system registry errors.
